After much investigation into trimmers and beard care generally I bought the Philips 5000 beard trimmer a couple of years ago as a mid-budget choice from a well-known brand. The adjustable nature of the guard was the main selling point as I didn’t want to be swapping in and out different guards – instead the scrolling wheel moves the guard up and down by precise amounts – these settings range from the shortest at 0.4mm up to 10mm. This combined with the claimed “no oil needed” by Philips on the blades themselves made for an attractive low maintenance product.
Usage has been frequent since purchase with a shave/trim basically every day. When not in use the trimmer is left on charge. For context I’d describe my beard as medium for coarseness and thickness.
I’m very happy to report a few things…
- Cut quality has been consistently high over the years. For some reason my beard is prone to snagging by some other trimmers I’ve tried, yet I struggle to recall a single “ouch” moment using this.
- The guide setting mechanism has worked well, not breaking or jamming even when dropped or being a bit heavy handed when inserting the guide.
- True to its word, it’s never needed oil.
- Battery life hasn’t been an issue – when travelling and unable to charge I get around ten uses before it sputters out.
Overall a solid recommendation for any man adding to his grooming toolkit. In fact this trimmer earns the best commendation a product can – I bought a second one as a backup for if/when the battery in this one goes!
